We got a call last year from a site engineer standing over a manhole that didn’t fit. The pipe invert was 300mm too high, the contractor was blaming the factory, and the factory had cast exactly what was on the drawing: a revision the consultant had superseded three weeks earlier. Nobody had checked the number in the title block before signing.

That chamber got re-cast. The road stayed open a week longer than it should have. All of it avoidable with twenty minutes on the drawing.

So here’s how to actually read a precast shop drawing before you put your name on it: the six things that matter, in the order we’d check them ourselves.

What is a precast shop drawing, and why does approval matter?

A shop drawing is the fabrication sheet we cast from. It turns the consultant’s design intent into buildable numbers: real dimensions, cast-in openings, invert levels, reinforcement, cover, and lifting details, all stamped with a revision and a title block.

The design drawing tells you what the chamber has to do. The shop drawing tells you how we’ll build it. When you approve it, you’re not agreeing with an idea. You’re releasing a document straight to the casting floor. Everything below the mould follows that sheet, so an error you miss becomes concrete in about a week.

What should I check before approving a precast shop drawing?

Six checks, every time. Miss any one and you risk a unit that’s technically well-made and completely wrong for the hole it’s going in.

1. Overall dimensions against the civil layout. Take the plan and section dimensions off the sheet and put them next to the civil drawing. Internal size, external size, and depth all have to land in the excavation with room for bedding and surround. A chamber that’s 100mm too wide for a shored trench is a problem you find at the worst possible moment.

2. Opening positions and invert levels. This is the one that hurt the site engineer above. Every pipe and duct opening has a position and a level, and the invert levels have to match the drainage design exactly, because water runs downhill or it doesn’t run at all. Check inlet and outlet inverts, the diameter of each opening, and which face it sits on.

3. The cover and access class. Confirm the top slab, access opening, and the frame-and-cover class match the loading above. A chamber in a carriageway needs a heavy-duty class; a landscaped verge doesn’t. The drawing should call the class out, not leave it to “site to confirm”.

4. Reinforcement cover to the steel. The rebar schedule matters, but the number a buyer should sanity-check is the cover to the reinforcement, the concrete between the steel and the face. In UAE ground and groundwater, thin cover is how durability problems start. Our chambers are cast in C35/45 to C40/50 concrete reaching around 45 MPa, and the cover is specified for exactly this reason.

5. Lifting point positions and capacity. These units are heavy. A mid-size chamber runs around 2,100 kg and a large one far more. The lifting anchors have to be positioned for a balanced lift and rated for the weight. If the drawing doesn’t show them, it isn’t finished.

6. The revision number. Last on the list, first thing that goes wrong. Find the revision in the title block and confirm it’s the current, consultant-approved revision — not a superseded one sitting in someone’s inbox. One wrong digit here undoes the other five checks.

Who approves precast shop drawings in the UAE, and how long does it take?

The short answer: the flow runs contractor to consultant, and for public utilities on to the authority: Dubai Municipality, Abu Dhabi Municipality, or DEWA for their chambers, worked to BS EN 1917 for the concrete unit itself. We cast only against the stamped, current revision that comes back approved.

On timing, plan for a loop, not an instant. A first submission commonly takes one to two weeks to clear; re-submissions are quicker. Then our production lead is 7 to 14 days on a made-to-order chamber. The programme killer isn’t the review time. It’s the second and third re-submission caused by a drawing that could have been right the first time. That’s why the twenty-minute read pays for itself.
