How to check a precast unit before you sign the delivery note
A precast delivery inspection checklist for UAE sites: what to check in the 10 minutes before you sign — cracks vs crazing, spalled edges, tolerance, lifting anchors, and the QA paperwork.
The message we get most often about a damaged barrier arrives a week after delivery, with photos, asking whether we’ll replace it. By then the units have been offloaded, dragged into position, and signed for clean. The honest answer is usually no — not because the damage isn’t real, but because nobody can now prove it happened before the truck left our yard.
So here’s the version that saves you that phone call: exactly what to look at in the ten minutes before you sign the delivery note, and which defects mean accept, monitor, or reject.
What should you check before signing for a precast delivery?
Check six things before you sign: surface cracks, edge spalling, dimensional tolerance, lifting anchors, the cast ID marking, and the QA paperwork. Those are the six that either fail an inspection later or come back as a warranty argument. Walk the whole load, not just the top unit, because the ones underneath took the strap tension on the road.
Is it a crack or is it crazing?
Crazing is cosmetic and you accept it; a structural crack is not, and you don’t. This is the single distinction that decides most disputes, so it’s worth getting right on the ground.
Crazing is a fine web of shallow lines across the surface, like the glaze on old pottery. It comes from the curing skin shrinking slightly and stops at the surface. It has no bearing on strength. Every large concrete face has some.
A structural crack is different. It runs as a single continuous line, often out from a lifting point, a corner, or the base, and it has depth. The field test we use: try to slide the corner of a business card into it. If the card corner enters, treat it as structural — flag the unit, photograph it, and hold or reject it. Hairline crazing won’t take the card.
What actually justifies rejecting a unit?
Reject on structural cracking, a damaged lifting anchor, spalling that breaks the profile, or a unit outside dimensional tolerance — cosmetic marks alone don’t justify it. The table below is roughly how our own QC sorts a defect when we load, and it’s the same call you can make at your gate.

The lifting anchor is the one people skip and shouldn’t. A jersey barrier weighs 1,600 to 2,400 kg in our standard 810mm K-Rail profile, and heavier still in a full 1.07m jersey section — every kilo of that hangs off the loop or socket when the crane picks it. A bent or corroded anchor is a dropped-load risk, not a cosmetic note. If the anchor is damaged, the unit doesn’t get lifted until it’s swapped.
How tight does the tolerance have to be?
Tolerances on a precast barrier are measured in millimetres, not centimetres. BS EN 13369, the common rules for precast concrete products, sets small permitted deviations on length and cross-section — a 3m unit that arrives 30mm short, visibly bowed, or twisted so the base rocks is out, and a run of them won’t line up cleanly on the road.
Three quick checks cover it. Tape the length against the drawing. Sight down the top edge for bow. Set the unit on flat ground — or eyeball it on the bed — and see whether the base sits flat or rocks. A barrier that rocks was either cast on a bad bed or damaged in transit, and it won’t seat properly against its neighbours. The barrier profile itself matters here too: RTA and municipality work expects a consistent K-Rail or jersey section for the restraint to behave as BS EN 1317 road restraint testing assumes, so a deformed unit isn’t just untidy, it’s off-spec.
What paperwork should come with the load?
The delivery note and the QA records for that batch — and the cast ID on the unit has to match them. The delivery note lists the units and their cast references. Behind it sits the QA/QC record: the concrete grade and strength result (our barriers run 35 to 50 MPa depending on the section), the approved drawing revision, and the RTA or Dubai Municipality approval reference where the job needs one. That strength result is worth more than a glance — reading the cube test report properly is what tells you the batch actually reached grade, not just that a certificate exists.
Do one cross-check before you sign: read the cast ID stamped on a unit and find it on the paperwork. If they don’t match, or the paperwork is missing, stop there and query it — a traceability gap is exactly the thing an inspector will pull you up on later, long after the truck has gone.
