Concrete Masonry Blocks in the UAE: Grades, Sizes & Where They Fit
A practical guide to masonry block UAE selection: hollow vs solid, the 7.5N/15N/20N strength grades, standard sizes, weights, and what blocks actually cost per piece.
The call we get most often isn’t about size or delivery. It’s a contractor halfway through a boundary wall who’s just had a course of block rejected because the grade on the delivery note doesn’t match what the structural drawing asked for. By then the mortar’s gone off and the wall has to come down.
So before you order, here’s what actually matters: hollow or solid, which strength grade, and where each one belongs. Get those three right and the rest is logistics.
What’s the difference between hollow and solid concrete blocks?
A solid block is a full concrete unit; a hollow block has voids cast through it. That single difference decides weight, where the block goes in the wall, and whether you can reinforce it.
Solid blocks carry weight. They go in load-bearing walls, the bottom courses that take the load from above, and anywhere you need to fix a heavy anchor or a gate post. They’re heavier to lay — a standard solid unit runs 34 to 36 kg — but they don’t compromise on strength.
Hollow blocks are lighter, around 18 to 20 kg, because the voids remove concrete. That cuts the dead load on the structure and speeds up laying. The voids also let you thread vertical rebar and grout through the cells, which turns a partition block into a reinforced load-bearing wall when the design calls for it. For partitions, infill panels, and most villa walls, hollow is the default.
| Factor | Hollow block | Solid block |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | ~18-20 kg | ~34-36 kg |
| Typical strength | 7.5N - 12.5N | 12.5N - 15N+ |
| Reinforcement | Cells take rebar + grout | Not applicable |
| Best for | Partitions, infill, reinforced walls | Load-bearing, anchors, substructure |
| Blocks per pallet | 80-100 | 48-60 |
| Dead load on structure | Lower | Higher |
What block grades are used in the UAE?
Concrete blocks are graded by compressive strength in newtons per square millimetre, and the common UAE grades are 7.5N, 15N, and 20N. The grade is set by the wall’s job, not by what’s cheapest on the day.
A 7.5N hollow block is fine for an internal partition that only carries its own weight. A boundary wall or a load-bearing villa wall needs more — solid blocks here run 12.5N to 15N, and structural or substructure work pushes higher to 20N. Underground courses also have to handle moisture and ground salts, which is its own reason to step up the grade and the density.
This is the single most common spec mistake we see. Someone orders 7.5N hollow for a wall the engineer designed around 15N solid, the cost saving is a few fils a block, and the whole course gets condemned on inspection.
What size are concrete masonry blocks in the UAE?
The standard concrete masonry block in the UAE is 400 x 200 x 200 mm, and that 200 mm width is the default for boundary and structural walls. Narrower widths are produced for non-load-bearing partitions where the wall doesn’t need the full thickness.
Sizing and dimensional tolerance follow Dubai Municipality DMS 001 Part 1: 2018 and the testing methods in ASTM C140, with mix and strength classification aligned to ASTM C90 and BS EN 771-3. Working to one consistent module matters more than it sounds: mixed nominal sizes on the same wall throw off your coursing and your block count, and that’s where waste creeps into the order.
We hold the 400 x 200 x 200 module across both hollow and solid units so coursing stays predictable from the footing to the capping course.
Normal or lightweight density — which do you need?
Density is the third decision, after type and grade. Normal-weight blocks give you the highest compressive strength and the best fixing for anchors, so they’re the choice for load-bearing and structural walls. Lightweight blocks — made with lighter aggregate — trade some strength for lower weight and better thermal performance, which helps on upper floors and where thermal compliance is in play.
For walls that need insulation built in, blocks are also produced with polystyrene inserts. That keeps the wall single-leaf while meeting the thermal requirement, instead of adding a separate insulation layer on site.
How much does a concrete block cost in the UAE?
As an indicative per-block range, concrete masonry blocks in the UAE sit around AED 2.2 to AED 4.5. Standard hollow blocks live at the bottom; solid and higher-grade units live at the top. The block itself is cheap — the expensive parts of a wall are the labour, the mortar, and a rejected course.
What moves your per-block number:
- Type and grade — solid and higher-strength blocks cost more than standard hollow.
- Density — lightweight and insulated blocks carry a premium over plain normal-weight.
- Quantity — a full project order prices better per block than a top-up load.
- Delivery emirate and offloading — a crane-offloadable pallet into a tight Dubai site isn’t the same logistics as a yard collection.
Because blocks ship by the pallet — roughly 80 to 100 hollow or 48 to 60 solid per pallet — your real cost is driven by the wall area and the coursing, not the headline per-block figure. Send the wall quantities and we’ll work it back to pallets and loads.
If your package also has site perimeter or boundary work, the same delivery run can carry hoarding blocks and fence bases; our hoarding block vs fence base guide covers which suits a temporary versus permanent line.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between hollow and solid concrete blocks? Solid blocks are full concrete units for load-bearing walls, anchors, and the courses that carry weight. Hollow blocks have voids that cut weight and let you run rebar and grout through the cells, so they suit partitions, infill, and reinforced walls.
What grades of masonry block are available in the UAE? Common grades are 7.5N, 15N, and 20N. Hollow partition blocks run about 7.5N to 12.5N; solid load-bearing blocks run 12.5N to 15N, with 20N for structural and below-ground work.
What size are concrete masonry blocks in the UAE? The standard is 400 x 200 x 200 mm, following Dubai Municipality DMS 001 Part 1. Narrower widths exist for non-load-bearing partitions.
How much does a concrete block cost in the UAE? Indicatively AED 2.2 to AED 4.5 per block, with solid and higher-grade units at the top of the range. Grade, density, quantity, and delivery emirate move the number.
Are concrete blocks load-bearing? Solid blocks and grouted, reinforced hollow blocks are. A plain hollow partition block is not — the wall designer sets the grade and whether the cells need rebar and grout.
The grade is where most block orders go wrong. People spec 7.5N hollow for a load-bearing boundary wall to shave a few fils, then the consultant rejects it. Pick the strength for the load, not the price — the block is the cheapest thing in the wall.
