What size cone for your road speed — 750mm or 1000mm?

Match the height to the speed: 750mm for low-speed and pedestrian work, 1000mm for live carriageways, faster roads, and anything at night. A taller cone is seen sooner, and on a road where drivers arrive at speed, being seen sooner is the safety margin.

The 750mm cone is the right tool for a car park, a footpath dig, event marshalling, or a lane taper on a low-speed access road under about 40 km/h. Once you’re on a live carriageway, a diversion, or a night shift, step up to the 1000mm. That’s the height the RTA expects on higher-speed roads, and it’s the one that carries enough reflective sleeving to read under headlights from a useful distance.

If you only stock one height for mixed work, make it the 1000mm. A tall cone on a slow road is over-specified and harmless. A short cone on a fast road is the one in the incident report.
