The call we get most often on median work starts the same way: “We need jersey barriers for the central reservation.” Fair enough, that is what most people call a concrete barrier. But when the job is a permanent median on a road that will be resurfaced two or three times over its life, the jersey is often the wrong profile, and nobody finds out until years later when the barrier is quietly under-performing.

What is a single-slope concrete barrier?
A single-slope barrier is a precast concrete traffic barrier with one constant sloping face, around 10 degrees off vertical, running the full height from the road surface to the top. There is no low near-vertical toe and no change of angle partway up. That single detail is the whole point of the profile.
We cast it as a 3.0m unit that stands 0.81m high on a 0.56m base, crash-tested to redirect an errant vehicle back into its lane rather than stop it dead. It does the same job as a jersey barrier. It just does it with a different face geometry, and that geometry behaves differently over the life of a road.
How is a single-slope different from a Jersey or F-shape?
The difference is the shape of the face a vehicle first touches. A jersey and an F-shape both use a two-angle face with a low, almost vertical toe near the road, then a steeper slope above it. A single-slope uses one angle all the way up. Same concrete, same reinforcement families, very different behaviour when the road level changes.

Why do permanent medians favour single-slope?
Because roads get resurfaced, and resurfacing quietly changes what a jersey barrier does. Every asphalt overlay raises the road surface by 40mm to 80mm. On a jersey, that overlay buries the low toe and pushes the effective contact point up into the steeper part of the face, which is not where the barrier was crash-tested to catch a wheel. Do it twice and the profile a car meets is no longer the profile that passed the test.
A single-slope barrier does not have this problem. Its face is the same angle from the road up, so an overlay simply makes the barrier a little shorter without changing the redirection geometry at all. The car meets the same slope it always would. It is a maintenance-life decision as much as a crash-performance one.
There is an honest trade-off here. A single-slope run costs about the same to buy but locks you into a permanent-median mindset. If the barrier line might move next year, you have bought the wrong flexibility. Match the profile to how long the barrier stays put.
When is a Jersey barrier still the right call?
When the barrier moves. For temporary diversions, work zones, and any run you expect to relocate, the jersey is almost always the better buy. It is our stock profile, it is what most UAE contractors already hold, and a diversion needs barriers this week, not on a cast-to-order lead time.
The jersey’s other advantage is redeployment. A work zone that shifts down the carriageway every fortnight is not being resurfaced under the barrier, so the overlay issue never arises, and the jersey’s fast lift-and-shift with standard lifting loops is worth more than the single-slope’s overlay tolerance. We also refurbish and re-supply jerseys at volume, which suits the churn of temporary works.
